What was Ulysses S. Grant's middle name?
The 18th president of the United States was born Hiram Ulysses Grant. As a young boy he hated the name and the fact that his initials spelled HUG. So he went by the name Ulysses. When his father found that a local boy that had gone to West point had lost his spot he decided to get young Ulysses the position.
He sent a letter to the local congressman Thomas Hamer, who he had earlier in life had a falling out and asked to get Ulysses appointed. Hamer got him in the final days of his lame duck term. He made a mistake on the appointment and listed the applicants name as Ulysses S. Grant.
When Ulysses arrived at West Point and found that the space was reserved for a Ulysses S. Grant not a Ulysses H. Grant he very quickly decided not to lose the appointment fighting the bureaucracy and changed his name to what we know him by. The S. has no meaning though the cadets often referred to him as 'Sam' as in Uncle Sam.
