What year was the first transistor invented?
The first device of the type was invented by three scientists in 1947. Most physicists admit that the invention was probably the most significant event in the sphere of electronics in the 20th century. On the basis of that invention, other scientists were able to integrate a microprocessor! Moreover, without this invention, we would have never gotten portable video products.

The explanations is very sketcky, and it's a pity, given that this was indeed a breakthrough. Shockley, Bardeen and Brattain received the well-served Nobel Prize in Physics in 1956 for creating a "solid state diode." Until then electronics were based on glass tubes in which electrons moved from one electrode to the other and were controlled by a third (grid) electrode. The invention showed that these functions could be performed by the transistor, and are now performed by microprocessors, which are transistors on a micron scale.

Obviously, those three scientists should have been awarded the "Nobel Peace Prize" in the "category of invention" for their major accomplishment.
