Chris Braun Incorrect, There was only one country and an attempted revolt. The revolt was quashed, so, there was only ever ONE country. Rebels always claim they are a country but unless they win they are not; which, is why we are a country even though we revolted. No state can leave the union, so, any state trying to form its own country is invalid as it can not leave the union. I've lived only 5 minutes away from Appomattox my entire life. I even live on former war grounds. My father and uncle found hundreds of Civil War bullets in my grandmother's yard. Robert E. Lee is my cousin. Virtually every school, street, and even our local Military base was named after him. Virginia has basically erased him from history, renaming everything named after him including Ft. Lee. His statue on Monument Avenue was the site of extreme vandalism and riots. They took down his statue and put one up of Arthur Ashe. Every single Confederate statue on Monument Avenue has been removed. It is hardly Monument Avenue anymore, but more like a very long street with historic homes.

In one of Fate's ironies, the first major battle of the war was in Wilmer McLean's front yard in Manassas. After the devastation of the battle, he moved his family to Appomattox Courthouse to escape the war, and the last major confrontation of the war took place in Wilmer McLean's front parlor.

No one I’ve ever known has supported the institution of slavery. Many people have a “confederate flag”. To them it doesn’t represent hate or bigotry, it represents the rights of states. Ben Totuous thinks he knows all, but he’s probably never actually spoken to a person from anywhere south of New York.

Six days later on April 14, 1865 Abraham Lincoln was shot. It seems like Abe was made a sacrificial offering for the reconciliation of the United States. Truly a Great Man.
