Did you know that the area was once a dependent part of another country? Moreover, it became independent only 57 years ago while most countries had already proclaimed themselves sovereign units. Guinea, as well as several other neighboring countries, was colonized by the French in the 1890s. Since that time, the land was under control of this European country.

The mid-twentieth century was a kind of emancipatory one. France was no longer able to deal with the colonies because of the political instability in the colonized area. So Guinea was given a chance to become a separate, sovereign state.

The choice was made and the country finally achieved independence on the 2nd of October, 1958.
