When did Hindi become the official language of India?
It happened on the 26th of January
Today, millions of Indian people consider Hindi their native language. The interesting thing is that there are only 10 million native Hindi speakers, while some people speak so-called related languages or dialects.
Probably, that's why Hindi is not considered the national language of the country. Moreover, there are 22 official languages recognized in the Constitution of India. Complicated, isn't it?

Doug, it's the official language in india, not the only one.
It is used for Government and Business.
Just like the separation of Mandarin and Contonese in China... One is for Government, and Business, the other is for common useage.
It's great to know another language anyway.. I personally speak 7, plus multiple dialects in each language.
If it works for countries with over a Billion People each, it can't be all bad.

I am Kenyan and British English is our national language. We also have Swahili and every one of the 42 tribes has its own language, and yes, I speak 7 languages.

I feel that a nation should have one official Language. It doesn't mean that people can't speak other language . It just takes time for the rest of them to catch up.

It all depends on the country. For instance, japan is a very mono-cultural country, so one would expect it to have one official language. However, countries like Australia are multi-cultural and while the official language is regarded as English there are significant numbers if local Indigenous people for whom it is not the "first" language.
