Building on the success of the International Year of Pulses (IYP) in 2016 implemented by Food Agricultural Organisation (FAO) and recognising the potential of pulses to further achieve the 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2019 designated 10 February as World Pulses Day. Pulses, also known as legumes, are the edible seeds of leguminous plants cultivated for food. Dried beans, lentils, and peas are the most commonly known and consumed types of pulses.

Pulses are high in dietary fiber and are an excellent low-fat source of protein. Pulses contain micronutrients like iron, potassium, magnesium, zinc, and B vitamins. Other health benefits include: helps to prevent and control diabetes, reduces risk of heart disease, lowers the risk of certain cancers, reduces cholesterol levels, aids in weight management and many others.

Many food organizations hold special events to promote this day. Foodies around the world publish pulse recipes on their websites. Restaurants prepare special dishes made with pulses. According to the UN, the theme of World Pulses Day 2022 is - '"Pulsesto empower youth in achieving sustainable agri-food systems". As per the UN, pulses contribute to creating livlihood opportunities and equity which are essential for sustainable agrifood systems. Pulses also employ women from the rural areas and the youth in farming as well as in the manufacturing sectors specially in Asian and African countries.
