The first Dr. Seuss book, "And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street", was published by Vanguard Press in December 1937. The story in the book follows a boy named Marco, who describes a parade of imaginary people and vehicles that travel along the road named Mulberry Street. Because of Marco and how he is acting, he makes Mulberry Street the most interesting and colorful location in town.

In 1936 on the way to a vacation in Europe while listening to the rhythm of the ship's engines, Dr. Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel: 1904 - 1991) came up with "And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street". The book was promptly rejected by the first 43 publishers he showed it to. Eventually, in 1937, a friend published the book for him. It then went on to gain some success.

Also just to note, it was an article by "Life Magazine" concerning illiteracy among school children that first inspired and prompted Seuss to write his very successful and best known book, "The Cat in the Hat". Today, in 2017 all or most of Seuss's books are greatly enjoyed by both adults and kids. They point out that they truly appreciate the distinctive style of Dr. Seuss.

Geisel as Dr. Seuss, Theo LeSieg and Rosetta Stone wrote more than 60 books during the course of his long career. His books sold over 600 million copies and have been translated into more than 20 languages.
