When was the last time that the World's Fair was held in New York?

The 1964/1965 New York World's Fair was the third major world's fair to be held in New York City. Hailing itself as a "universal and international" exposition, the fair's theme was "Peace Through Understanding", dedicated to "Man's Achievement on a Shrinking Globe in an Expanding Universe"; American companies dominated the exposition as exhibitors.

The theme was symbolized by a 12-story high, stainless-steel model of the earth called the Unisphere. The fair ran for two six-month seasons, April 22 – October 18, 1964 and April 21 – October 17, 1965. Admission price for adults (13 and older) was $2 in 1964 (equivalent to $15.26 in 2015) but $2.50 in 1965, and $1 for children (2–12) both years (equivalent to $7.63 in 2015).

What I remember most about all the times I visited, was sitting on the floor staring at Pieta and cogitating the sins of humanity. I did this as often as I could get there, because I wasn’t sure I would ever have another opportunity to commune with this masterpiece ever again. I never did get to Italy, so I have no regrets.

That was the year after I graduated H.S.. As my first big outing, I drove to see it in my '54 Chrysler. Great show! But Abe Lincoln's robot blew a fuse. The Unisphere is still there.

I lived a few blocks from one of the entrances, so went many times. Even cut school in 8th grade to go to the first day it opened. Would have gotten away with it, except a neighbor saw me on TV and told my mother.

I know because I took the bus from Ridgewood, NJ, to get there all by myself! It was great, I have to say. My favorite exhibit was Israel's nifty building with stained glass "balls" in the walls! And the Spanish dancers also were really out of sight!
