El Escorial is a historical residence of the Kings of Spain, in the town of San Lorenzo some 45 kilometres NW of Madrid. It is also a monastery, basilica, pantheon, library, museum, university, school and hospital dating back to the 16th century.

Under the royal chapel of the Basilica is the Royal Pantheon where Spanish monarchs since Charles I have been buried.

The pantheon consists of twenty-six marble sepulchres that contain the remains of kings and queens of the Habsburg and Bourbon dynasties. The reigning monarch is Felipe VI of Bourbon and Greece

The remains of King Felipe VI's grandparents, lie at a place called a "pudridero", or decaying chamber, awaiting interment; the process takes 50 years. With the interment of these remains, all the sepulchres in the pantheon will be filled. No decision has yet been announced as to the final resting place of now-abdicated Juan Carlos I, Queen Sofía, Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, and any future monarchs.

King Felipe VI ascended the throne on 19 June 2014 upon the abdication of his father, Juan Carlos I.
