Where is Jeju Island?

Jeju Island is an island in the Jeju Province of South Korea. The island lies in the Korea Strait, south of the South Jeolla Province. The island contains the natural world heritage site, Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes. 'Jejudo' (Korean) or Jeju is dominated by 'Hallasan': a volcano 1,950 metres (6,400 ft) high and the highest mountain in South Korea.

The island measures approximately 73 kilometres (45 mi) across, east to west, and 41 kilometres (25 mi) from north to south. Before the Japanese annexation in 1910, the island was usually known as Quelpart to Europeans; during the occupation it was known by the Japanese name Saishū. The population as of 2019, is about 65,000.

Jeju has a moderate climate; even in winter, the temperature rarely falls below 0 °C (32 °F). Jeju is a popular holiday destination and a sizable portion of the economy relies on tourism and economic activity from its civil/naval base.

On November 11, 2018, preparations were made for North Korean leader Kim Jung-Un to visit Jeju during his visit to South Korea. The announcement came in after 200 tons of tangerines which were harvested in Jeju were flown to North Korea as a sign of appreciation for nearly 2 tons of North Korean mushrooms which Kim allowed South Korean President Moon Jae-In to take back to South Korea following the September 2018 inter-Korean summit.
