Where is the cardiac sphincter located?
The cardiac sphincter prevents acidic content of the stomach from backing up into the esophagus. When the cardiac sphincter is not functioning properly, esophageal reflux can occur causing what is typically referred to as heartburn.
Over time, the esophagus may be damaged by the acidity of the gastric juices leading to ulceration of the esophagus. Several over the counter medications may help to minimize the symptoms, or a physician may prescribe medications.
