Chitkul is a village in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh. During winters, the place mostly remains covered with snow and the inhabitants move to lower regions of Himachal. It is a village located on the right bank of the Baspa River and the last village on the old Hindustan-Tibet trade route. It is also the last point in India one can travel to without a permit. Chitkul is around 569 km (353 miles) from the National capital of New Delhi and 243 km (151 miles) from Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh.

The Mathi Temple, dedicated to Goddess Mathi (Goddess of Kinnaur), is worshipped for centuries. The temple, designed in a different style and architecture from the rest of the other Hindu Temples, has an ark of walnut wood covered with clothes and a tuft of yak tail. This temple is built in the traditional Kathuni style and is in the precise centre of the village. It showcases the unique architecture and amazing woodwork of those olden days with a beautiful blend of tradition with uniqueness from other Hindu Temples.
