Where is the center of Mormon cultural influence located?
Mormons are a religious and cultural group related to Mormonism, the principal branch of the Latter Day Saint movement of Restorationist Christianity, which began with Joseph Smith in upstate New York during the 1820s. After Smith's death in 1844, the Mormons followed Brigham Young to what would become the Utah Territory. Today, most Mormons are understood to be members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Some Mormons are also either independent or non-practicing. The center of Mormon cultural influence is in Utah, and North America has more Mormons than any other continent, though the majority of Mormons live outside the United States.

I’ll treasure the 25 years I lived in Salt Lake City, and although I am not religious (or LDS), I enjoyed living amongst my Mormon friends.

I am a Christian man of 73 years. Throughout my life I have had the pleasure of meeting many people of many different faiths. I have met many Mormons and I am yet to meet one that wasn’t a nice person. I am steadfast in my faith, however, I believe that each of us should meet some Mormon families and I think that you will find them to hold many of the principles that we of other faiths hold dear. If you can concentrate on the positive you can learn so much from other people having different faiths and cultures. Many Mormons live, not just speak, their faith as more of us should. I know of many of their cultish ways that I do not subscribe to, but I have seen many who have faced challenges and stood fast when I am uncertain that I would.

First, we aren't Mormons. We're Christian, hence the name of the church, The Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints. Yes we believe many truths that were removed from the Bible and the teachings of Christ over centuries of revisions were restored by modern day revelation. We aren't a cult, never have been never will be. We aren't captives as some comments have suggested. Our Church encourages us to read the scriptures, pray and learn for ourselves. I appreciate the many positives comments but some of you just need to actually look into matters for yourselves. Just to address some inaccuracies in the answer... Joseph Smith was murdered along with his brother by a mob, shot while in custody.
That isn't just dying. Following Brigham Young is a lovely way to gloss over the persecution, murder and theft of property that actually occurred sanctioned by the extermination order issued by Governor Boggs of Missouri. Refugees led to the west to find sanctuary would be more accurate description of the first pioneers that settled Utah.

krkyates, True. They are simply referred to as Mormons by outsiders because of their belief in that ancient prophet. I realize for some who use this word they may consider it to be a pejorative, but I doubt that most of them do now.
