Where is this?

This giant rock is Uluru, one of the must-see features of Australia, Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, is a large sandstone rock formation in the southern part of the Northern Territory. The rock is in a remote location in the center of this vast country: it lies 335 km (208 mi) south-west of the nearest large town, Alice Springs, 450 km (280 mi) by road.

...and today, 25.10.19 marks the last day that tourists & other visitors will be allowed to climb the rock. This is out of respect to the rocks traditional 'owners', the Yankunytjatjara and Pitjantjatjara people.

A very important Aboriginal cultural site also. Perhaps if more people understood that they wouldn't want to scramble all over it and chip bits off it!

PS - the rock is now known by its Aboriginal name "Uluru". Ayers Rock may appear on older maps but is no longer used officially.

I was there, pictures to prove that it was pouring down rain, the waterfalls that developed were short lived but absolutely beautiful

Lynne Cage, I visited Uluru in 1972. But did not climb it because there were requests not to do so because it was disrespectful (to Anangu) to climb it. The only difference now is that it is no longer a request. It has long been disrespectful.

9.4 kilometres around the base, although because the walking track doesn't always hug the base of the rock, the actual base walk is between 11 and 12 kilometres. At its highest point, 348 metres. Only thing is, though, this figure refers just to what's above ground. The more conservative estimates suggest it extends underground for another 1.5 to two kilometres. Formed entirely of arkose sandstone and believed to have been there for something like 350 million years.
