Where on the human body is the temporal bone?

The temporal bones are situated at the sides and base of the skull, and lateral to the temporal lobes of the cerebral cortex.

The temporal bones are overlaid by the sides of the head known as the temples, and house the structures of the ears. The lower seven cranial nerves and the major vessels to and from the brain traverse the temporal bone.

The temporal bone consists of four parts— the squamous, mastoid, petrous and tympanic parts. The squamous part is the largest and most superiorly positioned relative to the rest of the bone.

Unfortunately, I became far too familiar with the temporal bone several years ago when I developed intense overwhelming pain in my head and jaws that would not go away with over the counter pain meds. Come to find out, the stresses of life had conspired against me to have me grinding my teeth at night, and I became another victim of TMJ, or Temporal Mandibular Joint disorder. I highly recommend NOT getting that. It was not enjoyable and the pain inflicted was beyond comprehension. I had to be fitted for one of those mouth guards, too. Not awesome. I feel pretty sure it never really goes away. I think sometimes I still grind my teeth, even tho that mouth guard is long gone. These days, my teeth just seem more inclined to break and fall out. Lucky me. I don't ever wish the pain of TMJ on anyone.
