Where was the Trammerzino invented?
The tramezzino was invented by Angela De Michelis and her husband Onorino Nebiolo in 1926, who decided to serve them as English and American tea sandwiches at their Caffé Mulassano in Turin.
It consists of two slices of soft white bread, with the crusts removed, usually cut in a triangle. Popular fillings include prosciutto, tuna, and olives, but many other fillings can be used. Its name is the diminutive of the word tramezzo, meaning 'in-between'.
The term tramezzino was coined by Gabriele D'Annunzio to replace the English word sandwich. He was an Italian poet, playwright, orator, journalist, aristocrat, and Royal Italian Army officer during World War I. He occupied a prominent place in Italian literature from 1889 to 1910 and in its political life from 1914 to 1924.
