'Singin' in the Rain' starring Gene Kelly (1912-1996) is a 1952 musical movie with the tagline "What a Glorious Feeling!". The line comes from the song 'Singin' in the Rain', which contains the lyric, "What a glorious feeling I'm happy again".

The movie is set in Los Angeles, California in 1927 at the point Hollywood changed from filming silent movies to "talkies". Kelly plays Don Lockwood, a popular silent film star who has just finished working on the film 'The Royal Rascal' with the superficial leading lady Lina Lamont (Jean Hagan, 1923-1977).

Don and Lina have starred in many romantic movies, but when 'The Royal Rascal' is remade into a musical, only Don has the voice for the new singing part. Despite a lot of practise, Lina sounds terrible and is replaced by a young, aspiring actress called Kathy (Debbie Reynolds, 1932-2016), much to Lina's disgust.

'Singin' in the Rain' received high praise after its release in 1952. It had remained one of the most loved films ever since and has been made into a stage production. In 1989, 'Singin' in the Rain' was among the first 25 films selected for preservation by the National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant".

Gene Kelly, born Eugene Curran Kelly, started as a stage actor before working for Hollywood. His first motion picture was 'For Me and My Gal' in 1942. By the time Kelly starred in 'Singin' in the Rain', he had a reputation as a major figure in the musical film industry.

Great movie--I still love Debbie Reynold's "flapper" dance number, in that pink outfit! She was so fantastic! And, who wouldn't love Donald O'Connor?

klmilles, It's a matter of taste and mood. While Kelly was a more athletic dancer, Astaire was the more elegant and urbane of the two. Making a choice is like comparing apples and oranges. I could never pick a favorite.

Richard D. Boyle, One of the big Russian ballet companies used footage of Astaire's dancing to teach grace in movement. Years later, after seeing Michael Jackson do the moonwalk at an awards show on TV, he called Jackson to tell him that he'd never seen anyone move as well as Jackson did. It was the ultimate compliment to a dancer from one of the world's best.

billyboy915, I think Kelly was better as a solo dancer while Astaire was better, much better, with a partner and he had some great ones…especially Ginger Rogers.

I've seen the movie a few times Loved the dance "Moses supposes" but I thought the movie was The dueling cavaliers. I don't remember anything about rascals.
