The 1975 film ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’ is a 92 minute low-budget story of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, who embark on a surreal search for the Holy Grail, encountering many, very silly obstacles on their journey. Budgeted at US$400,000, it realized US$5 million at the box office.

The movie parodies the legend of King Arthur’s quest for the Holy Grail, a treasure considered a cup, dish, or stone with miraculous powers that provides eternal youth or sustenance in infinite abundance.

Various legends abound, one claiming that the Holy Grail is the vessel used by the Jesus at his last supper. Other legends write that the Holy Grail was used by Joseph of Arimathea to catch the blood from the crucified Jesus at the foot of his cross.

These legends became woven with the other legends described in works of literature over the centuries.

The movie is set in 932 AD with King Arthur and his squire Patsy, who travel to Britain searching for men to join the Knights of the Round Table. Along the way, Arthur debates whether swallows could carry coconuts. Together the two pass through a town infected with the Black Death. Along their journey, Arthur recounts receiving Excalibur (legendary sword) from the Lady of the Lake, then defeats the Black Knight and observes an impromptu witch trial. And this is just the beginning of their surreal search.

While contemporary reviews of the film were mixed, the film’s reputation grew over time.
