William Laughlin, You're wrong on 3 counts. 1. You can't prove a negative. People who are deterred from committing crimes don't commit crimes, so they're not counted. 2. Condemned criminals generally don't go gentle into that good night. Most of them fight & fight hard, & a number of them become even better than many lawyers. 3. One way the death penalty deters is shown by the jailed Mafia Don. He may be old & frail, but the most dangerous criminal won't touch him because he knows if he does, he's a dead man. The state death penalty is often capricious & subject to endless delays, so it doesn't always deter. But, sometimes it does.

elizawheeler, There are 10 inmates on death row in Kansas, 7 of them are white. What you are saying since there are too many white males on death row that makes it rasist. Two of the 3 are the Carr Brothers who killed 5 people and seriously wounded several others in a week long crime spree.

Like most things in the United States, the death penalty is extremely racist. I don't believe in the death penalty, but if it's going to exist it needs to be completely unbiased. Since that is impossible, it should be federally outlawed.

William Laughlin, I COMPLETELY AGREE with you bc I think it barbaric, morally wrong & it's far from right for the families, etc to go thru grieving no matter who does it or what form it takes no matter what any does.

Tough question, but went with Utah. I remember Gary Gilmore being executed in Utah late 1970s, and I vaguely recalled that being by firing squad.
