The American actor who was awarded the Purple Heart, a military decoration, two times while in the US Armed Services was James Garner. His original name James Scott Bumgarner and he was born in April 1928 in Norman, Oklahoma, U.S. He lived for 86 years and died in July 2014 in Brentwood, California. Garner was as American actor who was noted for his portrayal of good-natured characters and reluctant heroes. He is perhaps best known for his roles in the TV series "Maverick" and "The Rockford Files".

He played leading roles in more than 50 theatrical films, including "The Great Escape" (1963), Paddy Chayefsky's "The Americanization of Emily" (1964), "Grand Prix" (1966), "Marlowe" (1969), "Support Your Local Sheriff!" (1969), "Support Your Local Gunfighter" (1971), "The Castaway Cowboy" (1974), Blake Edwards' "Victor/Victoria" (1982), and "Murphy's Romance" (1985), for which he received an Academy Award nomination. Garner's career and popularity continued through another decade in movies: "Space Cowboys" (2000), voicing an animated film titled "Atlantis: The Lost Empire" (2001), and "The Notebook" (2004). Garner's last screen appearance came in 2006's "The Ultimate Gift".

After serving in the US Army during the Korean War, Garner pursued his acting career which spanned 54 years. It was when he went to Korea for 14 months, as a rifleman in the 5th Regimental Combat Team then part of the 24th Infantry Division, that he was wounded twice and received his two Purple Hearts.
