Albert William Kaline, known as Al Kaline, was the Detroit Tigers player who was nicknamed "Mr. Tiger". He received this nickname as a result of his longtime association with the Tigers organization both as a player, assistant coach, consultant to the team and sports announcer of their games after he retired.
He worn jersey number 6. Born December 19, 1934, he is an American former Major League Baseball (MLB) right fielder and member of the Baseball Hall of Fame. His first appearance with the Tigers was on June 25, 1953.
Kaline played his entire baseball career with the Detroit Tigers. For most of those years, Kaline played in the outfield, mainly as a right fielder where he won 10 Rawlings Gold Glove Awards. This is a prestigious award given annually to a player judged to have exhibited superior individual fielding performance in both the American and National League. He was known for his strong throwing arm.
Throughout his baseball career he was selected to 18 All-Star Games and was selected as an All-Star each year between 1955 and 1967. His last MLB appearance with the Tigers was on October 2, 1974.
After his playing career and various supporting roles to the team, he remained active with the Tigers organization, serving first as a color commentator on the team's television broadcasts (1975-2002) mostly providing the play-by-play as an announcer with former Tiger and fellow Hall of Famer George Kell.
