Which animal ingests poisonous food daily?
Adult koalas feed almost entirely on eucalyptus leaves, which not only have little nutritional value, they are inherently poisonous and hard to digest. Koalas can eat more than a pound of eucalyptus leaves a day.
To manage this difficult food, the koala has evolved a large number of genes that produce special enzymes that break down poisonous compounds. Until a baby koala’s gut is fully developed, it will eat a predigested version of the plant that its mother poops out.
