Avantame is marketed as 20,000 times sweeter than sugar and has the highest sweetness known. It is a non-calorie sweetener from Japan's Ajinomoto Company. It is synthesized from isovanillin and aspartame. The E-number for 'advantame' is E 969. Its chemical formula is C24H30N207. Advantame is classified as generally recognized as safe by the Flavor and Extract Manufacturers Association for use in dairy, frozen desserts, beverages, and chewing gum. The Center for Science in the Public Interest, Washington, ranks 'advantame' as safe.

Dangerous stuff. No calories, but the body doesn't differentiate one sugar from another. Sugar is bad enough, but the chemicals used to make artificial sweeteners are so much worse.

Marian Spitzig, stevia is derived from the leaves of a plant called Stevia rebaudiana native to Brazil and Paraguay. Aspartame is manufactured in a lab - they are complete different substances.
