The American Leopard Hound is an American breed of hunting dog. It is recognized by the United Kennel Club (UKC) as a scenthound and is in the American Kennel Club's Foundation Stock Service.

The American Leopard Hound is 21 to 27 inches (53.34-68.58 cm) tall and may weigh from 35 to 75 pounds (15-34 kgs). It comes in a leopard or spotted pattern and may be red, blue, merle, brindle, black or another color, with white making up less than a third of the coat. The American Leopard Hound has a dense, short coat, medium-length drop ears and may have yellow, brown, or blue eyes.

The American Leopard Hound is descended from crosses between dogs brought to the New World by Spanish conquistadors and native dogs of Mexico. It was later brought to the United States by settlers who used it to hunt hogs.

It was recognized as the 'Leopard Cur' by the UKC in 1998. The name was changed to American Leopard Hound in 2008. While the American Leopard Hound is not formally recognized by the AKC, it is in their Foundation Stock Service, and has been since 2012.

That's a Catahula Leopard Hound, from Catahula Parish, Louisiana. You will find them either with primarily black fur with white spots, or white fur with black spots. The white fur dogs tend to have many medical issues, and most of the time are euthanized at birth for that reason. They are herding dogs like you wouldn't believe, normally working in pairs, controlling herds of pigs, cattle, etc. They are quite active and use their wide snouts to "move along" the animals they are herding. Considering that pigs tend to be very nasty, it takes a lot of energy and verve for the dogs to do their job. My daughter had one of these dogsm which she named "Bentley." He was strong. I weight 180 pound plus and that dog would stick his snout between my legs and pick me up off the floor by my crotch. Broad shouldered, you didn't want to get in his way. Even at a kennel, Bentley would herd the other dogs! His companion at home was a Belgian Malinois, trained for Army police dog service. Bently tried to herd Icarus, to the point where Bentley dislocated Icarus' hip, ending his value as a bomb-sniffing, police dog. Bentley had a tumor in his nose which caused serve bleeding and he had to be put down, hence our family's experience with primarily white fur dogs having significant medical problems.

We have a Catahula and she is a very serious dog, but does have a sense of humor. She was an abused stray and lost one eye, but she is a spectacular athlete and if she likes another dog play is vigorous. If she doesn't like the dog its war!
