John Robert Anderson (October 1922 – August 1992) was an American character actor who performed in hundreds of stage, film, and TV productions. He had a career that spanned over four decades. During his professional career, he appeared eleven times in the TV series "The Rifleman", 1959–1963.
Anderson was born and raised in Clayton, Illinois in 1922. He served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II, where he met artist Orazio Fumagalli, who became his lifelong friend. Fumagalli helped him with his acting and Anderson's ability to get good stage and TV jobs.
An accomplished actor, Anderson started out on Broadway, including an appearance in the musical Paint Your Wagon in 1951. He later worked primarily in film and television. Anderson's education notes that he held a master's degree in drama from the University of Iowa.
