Rawaki is one of the Phoenix Islands in the Republic of Kiribati, also known by its previous name of Phoenix Island. It is a small, uninhabited atoll, approximately 0.75 by 0.50 miles (1.2 by 0.8 km) in size and 65 hectares (160 acres) in area, with a shallow, brackish lagoon that is not connected to the open sea.

In 2008, it was placed, within the Phoenix Islands Protected Area, one of the largest marine protected areas in the world.

It has never been invaded by rats, it also boasts various species of flies, moths, leafhoppers, green bugs, and spiders. Sea birds consist of sooty, grey, and white terns; frigates, petrels and shearwaters; boobies, migratory plover and curlew.

Kiribati, officially the Republic of Kiribati, is an island country in Oceania in the central Pacific Ocean. There is a total land area of 313 square miles (811 km²) dispersed over 3.5 million km² (1.4 million mi²) of ocean.

It gained its independence from the United Kingdom, becoming a sovereign state in 1979. Its capital is South Tarawa, the most populous area, which consists of a series of islets, connected by a series of causeways. These comprise about half the area of the Tarawa Atoll.

Fishing and the export of copra have driven a large part of its economy. Kiribati is one of the least developed countries in the world and is highly dependent on international aid for its economy.
