The Flag of Vietnam carries colors that are very popular in this part of the world - red and yellow. Red is used as a background and yellow fills the five-pointed star placed in the middle of the flag.

The design of the flag refers to the communist past and also it is a symbol of the struggle against the French domination. Each peak of the star represents different population category that contributed to build socialism in Vietnam - peasants, workers, intellectuals, youth and soldiers.

The star should commemorate national unity, which is very important concept for the country that has undergone so many turbulences.

Until 1975, Vietnam was divided into northern and southern part, where North Vietnam was supported by China and the USSR and South Vietnam was enjoying the patronage of the USA.
