Maldives, in full, the Republic of Maldives, also called Maldive Islands, is an independent island country in the north- central Indian Ocean.The capital island Male is about 400 miles (600km) south- west of Sri Lanka.

Dhivehi is the national language of the Maldives and has been shaped by various languages including Arabic, French, Portuguese, Persian and English. Dhivehi is an Indo-Aryan language derived from Sinhalese language of Sri Lanka. Several Dhivehi scripts have been used by Maldivians during their history. The first Dhivehi script likely appeared in association with the expansion of Buddhism throughout South Asia. This was over two millennia ago, in the Indian Mauryan period, during Ashoka's time. Manuscripts used by Maldivians Buddhist monks were probably written in a script that slowly evolved into a characteristic Dhivehi form.

Dhivehi is written in the Thaana alphabet and like Arabic, is written from right to left. It indicates vowels with diacritic marks derived from Arabic. Each letter must carry either a vowel or a sukun (which indicates "no vowel").

Many Maldivians also speak and understand English, French, German, Russian, Italian and Chinese languages. The Dhivehi language is spoken by virtually the whole population. Dhivehi is also spoken on Minicoy Island, Lakshadweep, union territory of India.
