Hasselbackspotatis is a type of roast potato side dish which originated in Sweden. The potatoes are prepared by cutting approximately halfway through into thin slices. The potatoes after preparation resemble a fan or accordion.

In their original form hasselbackspotatis are usually drizzled with melted butter, seasoned with salt and pepper and topped with bread crumbs.

The original recipe has undergone a range of variations with many chefs. Grated hard cheese, such as Parmesan or Västerbottensost (Swedish hard cheese) is commonly used to replace some or all of the breadcrumbs.

The name is derived from the Hasselbacken restaurant opened in 1853 in Stockholm where this method of preparation was first introduced in the 1940s. It was first established as a tavern and was originally just a traditional red hut in the middle of thicket of hassel (hazel) on a steep backe (slope).

Hasselbackspotatis when first served were an instant hit because not only do they taste really good, but they also look so stylish. Since they first appeared in Sweden they have become popular all over the world. They go especially well with roast meats or poultry.
