Which country out of these is not a member of The United Nations?
193 out of the 196 countries in the world are members of The United Nations. The three countries that are not a part of the UN are Taiwan, Kosovo, and Vatican City. In 1971 The Republic of China replaced Taiwan in The United Nations. In 2008 Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia but has not gained complete international recognition, which in turn does not make it eligible to become a member. The approximate 840 people of Vatican City have not chosen to become a member of the organization.

Ian Swindale, Taiwan is the correct answer. The other three are all members. China replaced Taiwan in 1971.

I knew it was Taiwan because of China. Now why would the Vatican want to join. It is the 'capital' of Christianity and would be protected by all Christians.

Sympathize with Taiwan, but it's hard to imagine China being left out

There is debate over Taiwan as a seperate country or a state of ROC. I have always understood it to be part of China.
