Which famous horse appeared in the film "Gone With the Wind" as Gerald O'Hara's horse?
The horse that Thomas Mitchell as Gerald O'Hara rode in the 1939 film "Gone With the Wind" was the later Silver (1937 - 1959) of the TV series "The Lone Ranger" (1949). Silver was the Lone Ranger's great white stallion. He got his name when Tonto (the Ranger's partner) once remarked that the horse's coat looked like silver.
Silver, the equine actor, starred in "The Lone Ranger" television series from 1949 to 1954. He was considered one of the most popular horses of all the western heroes. The first horse to portray Silver had the real name of White Cloud. At an impressive 17+ hands tall, he was known to be very gentle and well trained. He was just over two years old when he appeared in the movie "Gone With the Wind". After a full career, he was allowed to retire after a brief stand-in appearance in the 1956 movie, "The Lone Ranger". He was thereafter only used for close ups and head shots.
In 1957, Silver won the Award for Excellence (Patsy). He lived out his days at the Ace Hudkin's stables in southern California. This became his burial site.
