The 1951 film "A Place in the Sun" is a film drama that is based on both the 1925 novel 'An American Tragedy' by Theodore Dreiser and the 1926 play, also titled 'An American Tragedy'. It is about a man who wins an heiress's love while he is coping with his girlfriend's pregnancy. It directly tells the story of a working-class young man, George Eastman (Montgomery Clift), who is entangled with two women: one who works in his wealthy uncle's factory, and the other a beautiful socialite.

George had been excluded from high society. He was given a blue-collar job at his uncle's factory. While ascending the ranks of the company, George becomes romantically involved with co-worker Alice Tripp (Shelley Winters). However, when he is introduced to socialite Angela Vickers (Elizabeth Taylor), he quickly falls for her, leading to a tragic love triangle.

"A Place in the Sun" was directed by George Stevens from a screenplay by Harry Brown and Michael Wilson. Besides Montgomery Clift, stars are Elizabeth Taylor and Shelley Winters with supporting actors that include Anne Revere, Keefe Brasselle, Fred Clark, and Raymond Burr.

This film was a critical and commercial success. It won six Academy Awards and the first-ever Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Drama. In 1991, "A Place in the Sun" was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
