"The Lion in Winter" is a 1968 film that has Katharine Hepburn, as Eleanor of Aquitaine. She is a queen who is granted a holiday leave from prison. The film is a historical period drama. It was based on 'The Lion in Winter', a 1966 play by James Goldman. It was directed by Anthony Harvey and produced by Joseph E. Levine, Jane C. Nusbaum, and Martin Poll.

This film is set in the 12th century. It is Christmas 1183, and King Henry II (Peter O'Toole) is planning to announce his successor to the throne. Jockeying for the crown becomes complex. Henry has three sons and wants his boy Prince John (Nigel Terry) to take over. Henry's wife, Queen Eleanor (Katharine Hepburn), has other ideas. She believes their son Prince Richard (Anthony Hopkins) should be king. As the family and various schemers gather for the holiday, each tries to make the indecisive king choose their option.

Eleanor married Henry II of England in 1152; he becomes king in 1154. They have 8 children: five sons, three of whom became kings; and three daughters. Henry and Eleanor will become estranged. King Henry will imprison Eleanor in 1173 for supporting their son Henry's revolt against him. She is not released until July 1189, when Henry dies and their second son, Richard the Lionheart, ascends the throne.

The film, "The Lion in Winter" was a commercial success (the 12th highest-grossing film of 1968); it won 3 Academy Awards, including one for Hepburn as Best Actress (tied with Barbra Streisand).
