Which future queen was imprisoned in the Tower of London as a result of Wyatt's Rebellion?

Elizabeth I (7 September 1533 – 24 March 1603) was Queen of England and Ireland from 17 November 1558 until her death on 24 March 1603. Sometimes called the Virgin Queen, Gloriana or Good Queen Bess, Elizabeth was the last of the five monarchs of the House of Tudor.

In January and February 1554, Wyatt's rebellion broke out; it was soon suppressed. Elizabeth was brought to court, and interrogated regarding her role, and on 18 March, she was imprisoned in the Tower of London. Elizabeth fervently protested her innocence. Though it is unlikely that she had plotted with the rebels, some of them were known to have approached her. Mary's closest confidant, Charles V's ambassador Simon Renard, argued that her throne would never be safe while Elizabeth lived; and the Chancellor, Stephen Gardiner, worked to have Elizabeth put on trial.

Elizabeth's supporters in the government, including Lord Paget, convinced Mary to spare her sister in the absence of hard evidence against her. Instead, on 22 May, Elizabeth was moved from the Tower to Woodstock, where she was to spend almost a year under house arrest in the charge of Sir Henry Bedingfield. Crowds cheered her all along the way.

Almost missed out on the Elizabethan period. Mary could have been having a bad day and had her sister executed instead of subject to house arrest.

Mary, queen of Scotts, did not kill her sister but her sister did kill her. Reverse of fortune, one might say.

No indeed, Jas Newman, she was imprisoned in Loch Leven Castle from 1567, and thereafter in Fotheringay Castle, where she was executed in 1587. Spent the final 20 years of her life in prisons, beheaded at age 45. Who would be a queen - or a prince or king, for that matter?

Chrissie, But Mazry Stuart was not imprisoned in the Tower.

Lady Jane Grey also was imprisoned in the Tower, but she was already there by the time of the Wyatt Rebellion; the rebellion probably hastened her to the scaffold. She was executed on 12 February 1554, and Elizabeth was brought to prison 5 weeks later, on 18 March.

Tyra Foster, Both are correct. Elizabeth Tudor was imprisoned by her sister, Mary Tudor, who preceded her on the English throne. As queen, Elizabeth imprisoned and later executed her cousin, Mary Stuart.

I'd forgotten that part of the rebellion. Remembered after reading the explanation. His name was Sir Thomas Wyatt, a protestant who in Feb1554 inspired the uprising in protest of the marriage of Mary to Phillip of Spain to seal the Catholic Faith in England and killed many Protestants during her short reign. Interesting history question. Thanks

The princess Mary was also imprisoned at one time . It seems to be a Tudor pastime to put ones relatives in the tower after a family disagreement. Usually it was over religion.

Keith McGrail, Mary was already queen at this point and was planning to marry Philip of Spain which was an unpopular choice with the English. Mary had Elizabeth imprisoned so that her supporters could not plot and place Elizabeth on the throne.
