Monarchos surprised everyone when he won the Kentucky Derby in 1:59.97 in 2001. He is the second-fastest Kentucky Derby winner in history. He rallied from 13th place early in the race to ultimately win by 4 3/4 lengths. In the race, Monarchos was one of 17 horses to participate. The race took place on May 5, 2001 before a crowd of 154,210 in attendance. Jorge Chavez was the winning jockey. Monarchos made his record winning run 28 years after Secretariat in 1973 had become the the fastest horse to "Run for the Roses".

Monarchos was sired by Maria's Mon out of the mare Regal Band. He was bred in Kentucky by Jim Squires. As a two-year-old in training, Monarchos was purchased for $170,000 by John C. Oxley. Within the career history of the horse, he was unplaced in the Preakness and ran third in the Belmont Stakes. Monarchos died in October 2016 after emergency intestinal surgery. He was just not strong enough to survive in recovery. After he died, the owners and fans stated, "He was a great horse to be around and had the best of temperament. He will be sorely missed."

During his career, Monarchos obtained 244 wins, earning more than $19 million US dollars. He was the sire of 2009 champion female sprinter Informed Decision, 2009 Scandinavian champion 2-year-old colt Aces Star, and 2014 Brazilian champion mare Estrela Monarchos. This is a very great legacy which Monarchos left to horse racing.
