Which is the famous golf trophy shown in the picture?
The modern Ryder Cup is a biennial men's golf competition played over 3 days between teams from Europe and the United States. The competition alternates between venues in the U.S. and Europe.
The competition was founded and initially sponsored by Samuel Ryder, an English businessman who wanted to see a regular competition between the world's best golfers from America and Great Britain. The first match was played in the U.S. at the Worcester Country Club in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Since the late 1940’s players from Ireland were able to qualify for the Great British team but American dominance in the competition still continued. This led to the agreement in 1979 that the Ryder Cup needed to be played between Europe and the U.S.A. to make for a more even competition.
The results would seem to justify this change. Prior to 1979, the Great Britain team had only won 3 times in 21 events. Between 1979 and 2018 the European team has won 11 Ryder Cups compared to the 8 wins for the U.S.A.
The competition has 12 players on each team and is match play format, with team fourballs and foursomes on the first 2 days, concluding with head to head singles on the last day. Automatic qualification for 10 players on each team is based on their performances on the U.S. and European golf tours. The other 2 players making up the team of 12 are selected by the respective Ryder Cup captains.
