The Alps is the mountain range that arcs its way across much of Europe. It is the youngest, largest, highest, and most densely populated mountain range in Europe.

The Swiss Alps are one of the 3 main geographic regions of Switzerland, the other two being the Swiss Plateau and the Jura Mountains. The Pennine Alps are a mountain range in the western part of the Alps. They are located in Switzerland (Valais) and Italy (Piedmont and the Aosta Valley). The Alps cover 65% of Switzerland's total land mass, making it one of the most mountainous of European countries.

The Dom is a mountain of the Pennine Alps, located between Randa and Saas-Fee in the canton of Valais. With its 4,545 m (14,911 ft) summit it is the third highest mountain in the entire Alps and the second highest in Switzerland, after Monte Rosa (Dufourspitze). The Dom is the main summit of the Mischabel group (German: Mischabelhörner), which is the highest massif lying entirely in Switzerland. Dom is a German cognate for 'dome' which can also mean 'cathedral'. The mountain is named after the surveyor Canon Berchtold of Sitten cathedral.

Almost all the highest peaks of the Alps are located within Switzerland. The highest peaks are Dufourspitze, the Dom which is the highest peak lying entirely within Switzerland, the Liskamm, the Weisshorn and the Matterhorn.

Of the 82, 4,000 metre peaks in the Alps, 48 are in Switzerland, and almost all the remaining 34 are within 20 kilometers of the Swiss border.
