Which is the only country which is crossed by both the Equator and the Tropic of Capricorn?
The Tropic of Capricorn lies at 23.5° South of the equator and runs through Australia, Chile, southern Brazil (Brazil is the only country that passes through both the equator and a tropic), and northern South Africa. The Tropic of Capricorn marks the southernmost point on Earth where the sun is directly overhead at noon. To be even more specific, it marks where the sun is overhead at noon on Dec. 21, which marks the beginning of summer in the Southern Hemisphere.
Brazil is South America's most influential country, a rising economic power and one of the world's biggest democracies. It covers an area of 8.5 million square kilometers (3.2 million square miles) and as of 2019 has a population of 211 million people. The word "Brazil" likely comes from the Portuguese word for brazilwood, a tree that once grew plentifully along the Brazilian coast.
Over the past few years it has made major strides in its efforts to raise millions out of poverty, although the gap between rich and poor remains wide. A former Portuguese colony, Brazil has a highly diverse population, including indigenous Americans and the descendants of African slaves and European settlers.
The exploitation of the Amazon rainforest, much of which is in Brazil, has been a major international worry, since the wilderness is a vital regulator of the climate.
