A landlocked state in the U.S. is any state whose territotial boundaries do not touch an ocean, gulf or bay. These states are locked among the contiguous 48 states of the North American mainland.

A state is called single landlocked if one must travel through only one other U.S.or Canadian province to reach an ocean, gulf, or bay. Similarly, in case of double and triple landlocked states. Hawaii is completely insular, and 22 states are coastal. Of the remaining 27 states and district Columbia,16 states and federal capitals are single landlocked,10 are double landlocked, and just one Nebraska, is triple landlocked. To reach an ocean, gulf, or bay from Nebraska, one must travel either south through Kansas, Oklahoma,Texas (shortest path) to the gulf of Mexico; north through South Dakota, North Dakota and Manitoba to Hudson bay; east through Missouri, Kentucky, and Virginia to the Atlantic ocean; or West through Wyoming, Idaho, and Oregon to the Pacific ocean.

Nebraska's area is just over 77,220 square miles (200,000 km square) with a population of almost 1.9 millions. Its state capital is Lincoln and largest city is Omaha, which is on the Missouri River.
