Which is the only US state that has a highway prohibiting automotive traffic?
Highway M-185 is the only highway on Mackinac Island in northern Michigan, a vacation location. Cars have been banned from the island since the 1890s after the first cars introduced on the island spooked the carriage horses and caused accidents. The scenic M-185 has remained almost entirely car-free ever since. Only horses, horse-drawn vehicles and bicycles are allowed here, which makes this highway unique and the only one of a kind. The highway offers beautiful, scenic views.

The only exception to the ban on automotive traffic is made for emergency vehicles. In fact the only motor vehicle accident in the history of the island occurred in 2005 when two emergency vehicles had a minor collision.

No cars allowed but V.P. Mike Pence and his 8 suv motorcade flaunted his VIP status and broke tradition. Locals were up in arms.

I read about Mackinac Island, and the fact that cars were prohibited, sometime prior to the year 2000 (knew it was pronounced Mackinaw). I also saw on Dr. Pols (the veterinarian) program a few months ago when he and his wife walked along the bridge on the day that cars were prohibited. All the favorable comments make me wish that I could visit.

Love this. Guessed incorrectly, but what a great idea! I wish my former little country road in South Carolina would return to that tranquility, instead of being now an Autobahn due to overcrowding!!! Probably a problem for many roads and people!

The summer after I graduated high school, I worked at the Island House Hotel, then headed to college in the fall. I grew up in Da' UP about 90 miles from Mackinac Island. At that time there were some private cars on the island, but they didn't come out until the tourist season, which ended on Labor Day.
