The sentence is badly constructed making it confusing to many. What they are trying to say is: "At $97,000 per household, their average income is $42,000 more than other typical American households." They also misstated the population of the area. San Jose has a population of a little more than ONE million, NOT 7 million and Sunnyvale and Santa Clara combined have less than 300,000.

These choices are Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs), not "cities". When you say city, you are referring to within corporate boundaries.

This is very surprising. Although that area is tech-heavy, there are many poor people in the San Jose area whose income would bring down any average. I thought this would be the least-likely answer.

As I said in my comments, there are many ways to measure wealth and "richest," but Scarsdale isn't the answer. In the NY area Short Hills, NJ, Chappaqua and Darien, CT are all "richer" than Scarsdale.

The answer doesn't even match the question. This question and cooreisponding answers are so flawed, it's hard to figure out where to begin. First of all the "correct answer" doesn't even match the question. The question asks the "richest city in America" and the "correct" answer isn't even a city, it's an MSA made up of cities. I won't even go into the various ways there are to measure wealth in a city or area, but an answer much closer to the correct answer to this question is Arlington, VA.
