Basque is the last surviving language that predates the influx of Indo-European speakers into Europe during the Bronze Age. Basque is considered a language isolate, since no relationship has been established among the known extinct pre-Indo-European languages (such as Etruscan or Minoan languages). The language’s grammar remains distinctively different from that of “Standard Average European” languages, even though Basque has borrowed up to 40% of its vocabulary from Romance languages and the Latin script is used for the Basque alphabet.

The Basques are indigenous to the Basque Country that include parts of four Spanish provinces and three French provinces north of the Pyrenees Mountains. The language is spoken by about 28% Basques (~750,000), most speakers live in the Spanish region of Basque country.
