Lata Mangeshkar (Born: 28 September, 1929 - 6 February, 2022) was an Indian playback singer. She passed away at the age of 92, after battling COVID pneumonia for several weeks. Lata Mangeshkar's last rites were held, with full state honours, in Mumbai's Shivaji Park at 6:30 pm on Sunday, 6 February, 2022.The Government of India has ordered two days of national mourning for the late singer. Bollywood actors, famous personalities and Indian politicians paid tribute to the late star.
She gave her voice to the music and lyrics penned by great composers and lyricsts of the time like Madan Mohan, R.D.Burman, Gulzar, and A.R.Rahman. Music directors stalled projects to accommodate her right schedule and composers wrote their music with her voice in mind.
Besides performing at Royal Albert Hall, London, she received several accolades and honours like The Nightingale of India, Voice of the Millennium and Queen of Melody, throughout her career. In 2021, she was awarded Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India. She was also nominated as Member of Parliament to the Rajya Sabha (upper house of Indian Parliament) in 1999. She lent her voice to more than 1,300 movies and sang over 25,000 songs. Her music has been used in Hollywood films like "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind", "Life of Pi", "Loin", and "The Hundred-Foot Journey". France conferred on her its highest civilian award, Officer of the National Order of the Legion of Honour, in 2007.
