Which model year is the best selling Ford Mustang?

The 1966 coupe model still holds the record as the best-selling Mustang of all time, accounting for nearly 500,000 of the year's sales. 607,500 cars in total had been sold by 1966. It is considered to be one of the most popular cars in history, and many people still adore and even collect them. Due to its high popularity, a lot of fake Mustangs have been made and sold.

The Mustang appeared at the beginning of 1964 and immediately became popular. After its "role" in the 1964 James Bond film "Goldfinger" it received even more favorable reports and positive critical acclaim. Within the first year and a half of the car's life and popularity, more than 1,000,000 cars were constructed by Ford.

While the Ford Mustang was launched five months prior to the official beginning of the 1965 model year and these early Mustangs are officially 1965 models, Ford gave the Mustang some changes at the official start of the model year, causing enough of a split in the models that they're now differentiated as the 1964 1/2 and the 1965 models amongst enthusiasts. If counted together, the 1965 model would have sold roughly 686,000 units, but the changes were significant enough to justify the split.
