THIS IS an incorrect answer and I'm now demanding references! Fact: the heart muscle does often get tired and often completely gives out and stops working!

Chris Brown and billyboy915, And with a cardiac arrest, the heart still doesn't stop beating, it fibrillates. An analogy for this could be a coffee maker that runs out of beans to grind will still have the wheels turning to try to form granules.
