'Carousel' (1945) is a musical by Oscar Hammerstein II and Richard Rodgers. It is based on Ferenc Molnár's 1909 play 'Liliom' about a carousel barker called Billy Bigelow, who falls in love with millworker Julie Jordan. Meanwhile, another millworker, Carrie Pipperidge, sets her heart on fisherman Enoch Snow. Carrie Pipperidge sings 'When I Marry Mister Snow' near the beginning of the first act, shortly after becoming engaged to Enoch Snow. She imagines what married life will be like and dreams about how wonderful life will be. Meanwhile, Julie and Billy's relationship threatens to ruin their careers.

The original musical opened on Broadway at the Majestic Theatre on 19th April 1945 and ran until 24th May 1947. 'Carousel' eventually opened in the West End, London, at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, on 7th June 1950. In 1956, it was released as a Twentieth Century-Fox musical film starring Gordon MacRae (1921-1986) as Billy, and Shirley Jones (born 1934) as Julie.

In 1945, a critic for the 'Daily News' said 'Carousel' was "one of the finest musical plays I have ever seen and I shall remember it always". 'The New York Times' agreed, saying "Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein 2d, who can do no wrong, have continued doing no wrong in adapting 'Liliom' into a musical play. Their 'Carousel' is on the whole delightful."
