Nauru, officially the Republic of Nauru (Nauruan: Repubrikin Naoero) and formerly known as Pleasant Island, is an island country and a microstate in Oceania, in the Central Pacific.
With only a 21 km2 (8.1 sq mi) area, Nauru is the third-smallest country in the world behind Vatican City and Monaco, making it the smallest republic as well as the smallest island nation. Its population of about 10,000 and is the world's second-smallest population-wise, after Vatican City.
Nauru became independent as a Republic on the 31st January 1968 and joined the Commonwealth as a Special Member. It was admitted as the 187th member state of the United Nations in September 1999.

As a point of interest, Vatican City is governed by the Holy See and is an ecclesiastical or sacerdotal-monarchical state (a type of theocracy) ruled by the pope, an absolute monarchy, the bishop of Rome, and head of the Catholic Church. The highest state functionaries are all Catholic clergy of various national origins.
