Junaluska, (Cherokee: Tsunu’lahun’ski) (c.1775 – October 20, 1868), was a leader of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians who reside in and around western North Carolina. He fought alongside Andrew Jackson, and saved his life, at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, though later in life he regretted having done so.

Years later, President Andrew Jackson instituted the removal of all Cherokee Nation Citizens from their lands on the East Coast, commandeering them in the quest for gold, and then had them migrated to the Central USA, in what is called the "Trail of Tears," the first major genocide of the American Native Indian.

More than half of the Cherokee nation died during that forced migration.
