Grog is any of a variety of psychoactive beverages, mostly alcoholic beverages. The word originally referred to rum diluted with water, which British Vice-Admiral Edward Vernon introduced into the naval squadron he commanded in the West Indies on 21 August 1740. Vernon wore a coat of grogram cloth and was nicknamed Old Grogram or Old Grog.
Modern versions of the drink are often made with hot or boiling water, and sometimes include lemon juice, lime juice, cinnamon, or sugar to add flavor.

A great morning drink is the hot toddy. My dad used to make them for overnighters at our Sonoma County, CA place. Rum, hot water, honey, lemon wedge, cinnamon, and cinnamon stick.

I'm Australian and 'grog' to us is a general term for any form of alcohol as is 'booze'. My old grandfather (1890~1973) used to drink rum in hot water with a dash of sugar as a winter nightcap.

I was told a glass of cognac is often warmed over a cup of coffee. Plus I agree with the other quizers. Hot buttered rum, Irish coffee, baileys and Sake are served warm.

1749, "alcoholic drink diluted with water," supposedly a reference to Old Grog, nickname of Edward Vernon (1684-1757), British admiral who wore a grogram (q.v.) cloak and who in August 1740 ordered his sailors' rum to be diluted. Eventually the word came popularly to mean "strong drink" of any kind. Grog shop "tavern where alcohol is sold by the glass" is from 1790.

In Germany Grog is Rum hot water and sugar. Drank it regularly whilst serving there.
As many have noted in the British navy Grog was watered down rum.

Grog isn't a specific alcoholic beverage but a broad term used to describe a variety of alcoholic beverages! It's used a lot during the holidays as a drink to get warm and wasted on!
