Saint Pierre and Miquelon, situated in the northwestern Atlantic Ocean near Canada, are the only remaining French possessions in North America. The islands are situated at the entrance of Fortune Bay, which extends into the southern coast of Newfoundland, near the Grand Banks. It is the only remnant of the former colonial empire of New France that remains under French control, with a population of 6,080 at the January 2011 census. Since March 2003, Saint Pierre and Miquelon has been an overseas collectivity with a special status. The inhabitants possess French citizenship and suffrage. Saint Pierre and Miquelon send a senator and a deputy to the National Assembly of France in Paris, and enjoy an amount of autonomy concerning taxes, customs and excise.
